Why details matter in waterproofing
We often say that attention to detail is one of the qualities that sets us apart. Given water’s ability to bypass obstacles and find its way through, only a meticulous examination of every detail ensures success in an activity as critical and demanding as waterproofing building roofs.
In rehabilitation projects—the type of work Prudêncio specializes in—each project brings unique challenges, requiring a keen eye and a commitment to delivering solutions that meet the highest standards.
In this article, we’ll explore the accessories commonly used in the most frequent terminations of waterproofing systems. Currently, Prudêncio focuses exclusively on applying Köster’s TPO membranes, so our emphasis will be on systems that utilize thermoplastic membranes.
Laminated profile
Laminated profiles, crafted through precision cutting and bending, are the go-to choice for custom project finishes. These sheets feature a galvanized metallic underside and a specialized top layer – coated with TPO or PVC matching the waterproofing membrane – ensuring a perfect weld. That’s why they’re called “laminated.”
The renowned “drip edge” profile is a standout example, ideal for perimeter finishes at façade junctions. What sets laminated profiles apart? They seamlessly hide and waterproof fasteners, creating sleek, continuous edges that stay watertight for the entire life of your waterproofing system. Forget the hassle of silicone joints and exposed fixtures typical of metal caps! Laminated profiles also ensure robust membrane attachment along every edge, adding unparalleled durability to your project.
Emergency overflow and drainage outlets – “Relief Pipes”
Pre-molded accessories designed to be inserted into rainwater drainage pipes and welded to waterproofing membranes ensure a seamless, completely watertight connection at this critical junction.
As for “relief pipes,” which typically pass laterally through walls or parapets to the exterior, we advise against channeling them. Leaving them open serves a dual purpose: ensuring proper overflow functionality while also acting as an early warning signal for necessary maintenance cleanings.
Chimneys and vents
Building on the previous point, these prefabricated accessories are welded to the base membranes, ensuring they serve their purpose as chimneys or vents while maintaining the waterproofing system’s integrity.
External and internal corners
These are critical areas in waterproofing projects. If not properly addressed, they can become weak spots where water easily seeps through. To ensure a durable and effective solution, it’s crucial to pay close attention to the detailing in these areas. By using reinforcement corners, you can enhance the strength and reliability of these vulnerable points.
Maintenance paths
To safeguard the most vulnerable areas of the waterproofing system, compatible non-slip mats are welded onto the membranes. These mats clearly mark the maintenance pathways, ensuring both reinforced protection and safe access for covering and equipment upkeep.
Tubular daylighting systems
Due to their fragility, traditionally used skylights represent a challenge for our roof restoration systems. For this reason, we present an innovative solution that provides natural light to buildings, eliminating the weaknesses associated with conventional skylights and offering numerous benefits.

Anchor points
This accessory, made up of several elements and already equipped with an integrated membrane to weld to the roof waterproofing, allows structures such as solar panels, air conditioning units, staircases or other equipment to be attached. It is fixed to the resistant substrate, passing through the waterproofing system without compromising its integrity and efficiency.
Decorative profile
With the aim of giving waterproofing with thermoplastic membranes an appearance similar to that of zinc roofing, these profiles can be welded to the membranes and have an exclusively decorative function.
The accessories presented, combined with the appropriate application techniques, ensure safety, efficiency and durability in the details and finishes of the waterproofing.
For Prudêncio, there would be no point in presenting Köster’s extremely durable TPO membranes if they depended on fragile and short-lived finishes, which would compromise the reliability of the entire system.
